Mike Devito really deserves a lot of credit. He has played well beyond what I imagined this season in wake of Kris Jenkins going out. I think we found real good depth that just took a few years to polish. He stuffs the run well and even though he doesn't move great, gets to the QB. I am a fan.

"Dolphins: Ryan vs. Crowder a throwback to Buddy vs. Shula

> Posted by Dave Hyde on June 11, 2009 08:27 AM
It was the summer of 1989 when Buddy Ryan, coaching in Philadelphia, said when asked about playing the Dolphins in that upcoming season, " `You want as many patsies on your schedule as possible,`` he said.

The next year, after a 20-10 preseason win against the Dolphins, Ryan said, "We didn`t play well, while Miami played about as well as they can play."

All this was a pointed jab at Don Shula. Their history went back to 1969, when Buddy was defensive coordinator of the Jets team that upset Shula's Baltimore team in the Super Bowl. When Ryan was fired from Philadelphia in 1991 without winning anything much, Don Shula looked down from his throne and said, "Normally I have sympathy (when coaches are fired). Today I don`t."

Flash forward to today: Ain't it grand to have another Ryan around talking smack?

New Jets coach Rex Ryan puts some good life and energy into the off-season. Promising a Super Bowl. Saying he won't kiss Bill Belichick's rings. Going back and forth with Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder.

When's the last time there was a good foil for the Dolphins on the opposing sideline?

You have to respect Belichick. Ditto for Marv Levy. Pete Carroll making the choke sign at Pete Stoyanovich showed the start of someting, but Carroll didn't stay around long enough to build on that.

Thank God for Rex Ryan. This could be fun. Here are some of his other quotes:

"I didn't come here to kiss Bill Bellichick's rings, I came here to win. We are not intimidated by New England or anybody else."

“I look at it as an opportunity, an opportunity that we can win immediately. There’s no reason we shouldn’t win immediately.”

"The players will have each other's backs, and if you take a swipe at one of ours, we'll take a swipe at two of yours." (a line straight out of Sean Connery in "The Untouchables," by the way)

And, of course, dad Buddy had to chime in:

"I think you can damn near guarantee yourself a Super Bowl if they stay healthy, both offensive and defensive.""

Benson said he doesn't know who David Harris is. Harris has a bad ankle.

CINCINNATI -- A day after Rex Ryan talked about his top-ranked defense getting the proper respect, the Bengals leading rusher slighted one of the Jets’ most pivotal defensive pieces. Cedric Benson, who was inactive Sunday night, didn’t exactly heap praise on Jets’ leading tackler David Harris, whose status for Saturday’s wild-card game is in question due to a left ankle injury.

“I don’t know how big of an impact he makes on that defense,” Benson said. “I’m not a big names guy or who’s playing. I don’t even really know who that is.”

Harris didn’t practice Tuesday. The Jets’ inside linebacker has arguably been the Jets second-most valuable player behind shutdown cornerback Darrelle Revis.

“They’re a good defense,” Benson said. “They play good. I’m sure they’ll find somebody to fill his spot just as good, just as capable of making that defense successful.”

Chad Ochocinco, who lost the one-on-one battle with Revis Sunday night (zero catches), heaped plenty of praise on Ryan’s unit.

“Confusing. Extremely confusing. Extremely confusing,” Ochocinco said of the Jets defense. “It’s not the personnel that I was playing against that I was worried about. I was more so worried about what Rex was going to do to me. I have a lot of respect for Mr. Ryan and playing against him when he was with Baltimore. His style can be very, very confusing.”

However, the Bengals’ talkative wide receiver said it will be easier facing Ryan’s intricate schemes for the second time in a week.

“We got it all on film,” Ochocinco said. “We’ll be ready. ... It makes the gameplanning a lot easier. “You know your opponent a little better. There’s only so much they can change from what they showed. So it should be interesting.”

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis admitted that “I could have gotten 12 guys from Jones Jr. High that could have probably played better" against the Jets last week.

Where’s Jones Junior High?

“It’s in every city in America,” Lewis cracked.

The bottom line: “We need to come back,” Lewis said. “Show our resilience again.”

Ochocinco’s invitation to Fireman Ed to fly out to the game was rejected by the long-time Jets fan.

“I talked to Fireman Ed,” Ochocinco said. “He declined and said he had to stick with Jet Nation.”

I missed the homerish part. You're the first person to accuse me of that on this board (wraith included). I've read some of your posts in the Giants thread, I think you're projecting.

Revis is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best corner in the league. Throwing around childish threats like "you will eat those words" only lessens your negligible credibility and gives Giant fans, of which I am one, a poor reputation.

I would always put my money on Revis against any other star WR as of now considering how well he has played this season. The playoffs will bring added pressure though, so we shall see. I personally believe he is the best corner in the NFL.

I remember before the 2007 draft my friend who is a Giants fan wanted them to draft Revis if he fell to pick #20. I didn't follow the draft as closely as I did starting in 08, but I knew Revis and Hall were the best 2 CB prospects, but wasn't really sure how good either was or which was better.

All I knew is the Jets could have used a young CB to take over in their weak secondary. When I saw they traded up with the Panthers from #25 I knew it was going to be Revis or Hall. Needless to say I am very happy they made that move. I'm sure the Bengals don't mind too much with how great Leon Hall has looked. The team who really got screwed was the Giants (and my friend) who settled with Aaron Ross when they could have potentially had either Revis or Hall if the Jets never traded up.

Sidenote - the Panthers got Jon Beason and Ryan Kalil out of the picks they got from the Jets so I don't think they are complaining

I'm not denying the guy's ability as an athlete. He is one of the best. On the other hand , you have to see who he is going up against. If he doesn't get any help over the top , he will get smoked. And another thing , this thread is not based on childish threats , it is intended to speak what you feel on said subject. Too bad your homerism doesn't let you fathom the fact that Revis is not some god out there that cannot be touched. He's human like everyone else. I would be the first to acknowledge talent and lack of it whether it's on your favorite team , or the team I root for. ( If I haven't proven that in my prior posts , then you can call me a Giant homer too if it makes you feel better ) In any case , I will stick to my prediction .......8 catches for 142 yards and 2 TD 's . We'll see how well Carson Palmer can perform.

This just confirms you haven't watched him play this year. He has gone up against and limited the best all year, mostly without help. His man coverage skills are elite and he will not get smoked by Ocho for anything close to your asinine prediction.

I was a big Pennington fan when he was a Jet, but I think teams would still stack the box and play coverage for short slants and timing patterns if he was still there. It is easier to defend the Jets offense with Chad at QB rather than Sanchez because Chad could never stretch it out.

If Sanchez plays within himself, doesn't make unforced errors and isn't forced to lead a 3 score comeback they are a better offense than with Chad.

Statistically, the Jets should win at Indianapolis. But we all know stats mean nothing when you're dealing with Peyton Manning.

If they win, expect an NFC Blowout. They can't beat either the Saints or the Vikings, either of which would be the best running team they've faced all postseason.

I also wonder whether they'll be able to make the playoffs next season. To ensure that they do, they need to pick up another receiving target. The Jets have possibly the most mediocre receiving corps in the league. Cotchery is decent, but I doubt he would even break the No. 3 spot on a team like Dallas, or Philly, or about 10 other teams. Edwards makes some amazing catches... But drops the easiest ones. He needs to go as well...

Most mediocre receiving corp in the league? The Browns or Dolphins don't fit this group?

Cotchery > Roy Williams and Jason Avant.

Cotchery is one of the more underrated possession WRs in the league. He catches everything and makes the most of plays with his size and speed after the catch. It's not his fault that the passing offense is short conservative passes to him or deep balls to Braylon, with Keller working the middle. He can get open too so that isn't a big concern. Braylon will be hit with a 1st round tender. So if anything the Jets might want to look slot guy with one of their 2 draft picks. Stuckey would have been that guy, but o well, I'd rather have Braylon "I dropped 4 TDs this year" Edwards.

Think about this Jets fans. All the pressure is on Indianapolis. In week 16 the Colts had a chance to euthanize the sleeping green giant that was the Jets. Instead they woke it up, and they are beating any and every team that's blocking the way since then, and the pressure is on the Colts to beat the Jets or else the media is gonna have a field day with them, and they would say they should have gone for the perfect season. Even if they beat the Jets and win the SB, they'll say they should have been 19-0.

Playing on the Chiefs and their Rent-A-QB philosophy can do that to you.

Tony Gonzalez still hasn't won a playoff game.

It just occured to me this morning that Jets fans can finally snicker at other teams fans who are scrambling for future mid-round wasted draft picks (Pike/Lefevour/Tebow) and pasttheirprime Penningtons now.
