NFL security confiscated a video camera and its tape from a New England Patriots employee on the team's sideline during Sunday's game against the Jets in a suspected spying incident, sources said.

The camera and its tape were placed in a sealed box and forwarded to the league office for investigation, the sources said.

"We don't have any comment," an NFL spokesman said Monday.

The Patriots' cameraman was suspected of aiming his camera at the Jets' defensive coaches who were sending signals to their unit on the field, the sources said. The league also is investigating some radio frequency issues that occurred during the game.

The league's competition committee could conduct a conference call about the incident, which violates NFL policy, and ultimately recommend a penalty that could cost the Patriots a future draft pick or picks if it verifies that the team was spying on the Jets.

"It's not their first time," a member of the committee, who did not wish to be identified, said.

In fact, Green Bay Packers president Bob Harlan confirmed a similar incident that occurred when the Patriots played at Lambeau Field last Nov. 19. The same cameraman who was questioned by NFL security on Sunday was also the one whom the Packers removed from the sideline and escorted from the field during their 2006 game, according to Packers security official Doug Collins.

"From what I can remember, he had quite a fit when we took him out," Harlan said. "We had gotten word before the game that they [the Patriots] did this sort of thing, so we were looking for it."

A Jets official declined comment Monday, directing an inquiry to the league office. The Patriots also did not have immediate comment.

No wonder the Pats won 3 SBs in 4 years.

I seriously doubt that. C'mon, if they really were cheating, they wouldn't make it that obvious.

ESPN wouldn't report it unless they had very reliable sources on this matter.

Belicheck really sounds like a shady kinda guy if u ask me.

LOL ESPN has reported a lot of shady things in the past. Don't read too much into this. Why would he cheat against the Jets? This story is just dumb.

who really cares if its true anywayz...if you think abt it, all thier doing(even if they really are doing it) is spying on what other teams are calling. It's up to the other team to game plan and keep the game plan a secret and watch out for spies and make sure that thier game plan does not get out. I mean, think about Wat; countries that have been to war with one another, have sent spies back and forth and have gathered important information. It's all about out smarting your oppoent.

Yeah, I really have no problem with this. It's not like they were poisoning the other players. If the Jets' coaching staff was making it so obvious what their plays were, I think they're the ones at fault.

Actually, you can't take that as clear-cut evidence because someone could have photoshopped that.

That looks photo shopped. Look the the scoreboard. I just think pennington2coles05 is having a hard time swallowing the fact his team got man-handled.

And also, I don't think this is such a big deal. If the Jets were smart, they would make new symbols and disguises for the defense every week. Cheating is all over sports, and I think ESPN blows this up because they have nothing else to report. Sure, it was against the rules, but I'm sure that every team in the NFL has some way in which they are getting an unfair disadvantage. People are saying that this is why the Patriots are good because they knew all the defensive calls. Thats just nonsense.

The Patriots probably did it but so what? They do this in baseball all the time. I mean if I was a coach I would probably spy on the other team.

And elaborating on this, what about LaDanian Tomlinson attacking the Patriots with his "if your not cheating your not trying" comment. I used to think this guy was classy, but hes starting to look pretty bitter.

If you think about it, if the Patriots had an opportunity to cheat, and didn't take advantage of it, I think that's even worse. I've always felt that you should do anything to give your team an edge. Nothing that would cause damage to anyone, but outside of that realm, anything should fly.

This whole thing is shady. Why would the Patriots steal signals from crappy teams and make it look completely obvious? I'm convinced that this is just some eager assistant trying to please Bill Belichick and earn himself a promotion. Even if New England is guilty of cheating, I don't find anything wrong with it. In fact, if the Patriots had the opportunity to gain a certain advantage "unethically" and they didn't do it, I think that's even worse because they'd be cheating themselves and their fans. I've always believed that you have to do whatever it takes to win, as long as you're not causing physical or mental damage to anyone (i.e. poisoning the other team, taking steroids, making racist remarks about other players or their relatives, etc.)
