I've always thought he would fit in well in Oakland. He can tutor Russell and play when he gets healthy.
And Tampa didn't sign him. YAY!!!
Any other thoughts...

Looks like Culpepper's going to be the sacrificial lamb behind that horrendous offensive line until they fix it up. Culpepper takes a lot of sacks and fumbles too much, so Oakland's offense could once again be pretty pitiful.

I don't understand what the Raiders are doing at QB. Why bring in Culpepper?

It doesn't make sense to me. I guess they think they have a better shot of winning with Daunte Culpepper rather than Josh McCown. Maybe they do, but it's still a long shot with a horrible o-line, no running game, mediocre receivers and a non-existent pass protection.

Exactly. Everyone knows they will win under 5 games so why bring in another QB. This move, like a lot of Oakland's moves lately, leave me scratching my head.

It seems as though Al Davis is desperate. Can't blame the man for trying, but he really needs to let someone else do most of the work.

Davis should accept defeat and play for the draft. They're not going to win many games, so they should just flop. Like Houston did when they should've drafted Bush.

I think it makes sense, get DC in to take the hits in the early part of the season while JR learns the O.

They brought a QB in to take the hits with Josh McCown. Signing Culpepper makes no sense to me and apparently not many people on here either.

As I wrote in my draft rumors, Daunte Culpepper has a chance to break his own record for fumbles in a single season (23).

They are just trying to keep Russell off the field as long as possible this season with this signing.

I guess, but that's what they planned to do with Josh McCown.

Lol to me it could be they have Walter, McCown and Culpepper because it will only be a matter of time before one gets injured and then all three end up on IR due to the that offensive line, so Russell may have to eventually step in....:o
In all seriousness good move by the Raiders. Gives Culpepper a chance to prove himself and means with yet another well known veteran signed Russell has even less attention on him and the chances of him being thrown in early are even slimer.

Your first point is actually something I was thinking. That's pretty funny.
After watching Culpepper in the NFC Central/North for many years, I'm predicting that he'll put the ball on the ground 4 times a game behind Oakland's o-line.

LOL that sounds about right - let's hope he gets enough starts to break the record.

Signiing Culpepper makes sense to me. Lane Kiffen is not used to these big QB's, with massive arms. He is used to running an offense with a Matt Leinart/Carson Palmer/Brady Quinn type QB, Good arm, Good accuracy, good mobility.
QB's like Culpepper, McNabb, Leftwich, there biggest asset is they are so big, they are hard to bring down. Letting Culpepper run things fro a year, gives Kiffen a year to iron out the kinks in his offense that type of QB might present. To mold his offense to best suite the JaMarcus Russell mold of QB befroe he steps onto the field.
Unfortunately for Josh McCown, this most likely means that when Russell signs, he is the odd man out and likely cut or traded. He is the only one thats free to release since Detroit already ate any kind of cap hit for him.
McCown to Atlanta?

Well, I don't think Culpepper's as mobile as he used to be. And while he is tough to bring down, he fumbles a lot. Look what he did in Miami last year. Even if he wasn't healthy, that doesn't really excuse his fumbles.

I dont expect him to fumble less, and i really dont think Oakland does either. Bottom line is it gives them a "Mock up" of JaMarcus Russell to play with for a year to iron out whatever kinks they can before the real deal takes over.

Yeah, but I think they had that with Josh McCown. Culpepper's not going to lead them to the playoffs. Maybe one or two more wins, but even that is questionable.

Culpepper isn't there to play just to teach Russel since they are someone similar in playing style

Adam makes a good point. They do have similar styles; but since has Russell been prone to fumbling? Am I missing something? ;)
