View Full Version : Tiered Fantasy Football

I had this idea about 2 years ago, but due to a variety of factors, I've never attempted to get it organized. I mentioned it again here: http://walterfootball.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9234 and received some good feedback.
Basically it's a fantasy league modeled after European soccer leagues. Each year, the top 2 teams in a league advance to the next tier, and the bottom 2 teams are demoted.
So if we had 48 teams, that would be 4 leagues. The first year, all 4 leagues would be on the same level. After that year, The top 3 teams from each league become part of Tier 1, the next 3 are Tier 2, etc. After each season, the demoting and promoting takes place. This kind of league attempts to keep the competition good in each league every year, so the worst are with each other, and the best are with each other.
The website we will be using hasn't been decided yet, but I'm definitely leaning toward using National Football Post's fantasy service, which will be unveiled in June (http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/04/fantasy-rookie-preview/).
I'm promoting this on a few message boards to ensure that we get enough people for this to be viable. If you are interested at all, could I ask you to do the following:
Email me at: jtkimbell [ at ] yahoo [ dot ] com
Make the title "Tiered Fantasy"
Put your username and what message board you are from down
I will keep all of the emails in a file, and you should receive league invitations and emails in June or July when I get the leagues set up.
Any questions or interest?

It's a possibility, but Joe Fortenbaugh of NFP got me all excited and I emailed him with some more questions.
If NFP's isn't good, we can switch, but they're promising some new features you can't find from other fantasy providers.
Basically the main point is the tiers, not the provider. We could even manage to use a different provider for each league.

It certainly can't hurt at all. I'd rather have more than enough people early, than not enough too late.
Since he's not on the boards, just have him say he's "Dave from Jersey" or something, so I have a name to call him by on my sheets (you are InjuredReserve from WalterFootball).

Totally OK. That's actually the purpose of this, you should (outside of the first season) always be playing with people of a similar skill level due to the tiers.
It probably won't be a keeper, due to the nature of the tiers, having teams move up and down each season, that would cause some conflicts in terms of multiple teams keeping the same player. Keeper leagues are fun though, if you can find some people who run one, it's worth joining.

In general, I have always drafted around week 4 of the preseason, giving you a week or 2 before the NFL season, but you have had a chance to see teams in the preseason.
I want to get a handful more people so we can have 3-4 full leagues. I hope to get the leagues set up and invites sent out in the next 4-6 weeks.

I have a question regarding this

and how will tiers by sorted out for this year?
No, not a keeper/dynasty league. That would be strange and confusing with teams being promoted/demoted.
Imagine there are 3 leagues of 12 teams. After the first year, the top 4 teams from each league will form Tier A, the middle 4 will form Tier B, and Tier C will be comprised of the bottom 4 teams from each league.
From there on out, the bottom 2 teams from Tier A will move down to Tier B, while the top 2 teams from Tier B will move up. Similar movement happens between B and C.
If we have 4 leagues, then there will be 4 tiers. If we have more than that, then we can discuss having multiple leagues per tier.
How many teams per league?
I want 12 teams per league. 10 teams or less allows for stacked teams, 14 teams or more gets a little ridiculous, while 12 teams forces you to dig a little deeper, but not too deep. You'll be strong in a few areas, weak in others.

Haha, awesome.
I would like to use some league software that would allow me to set up all 3 leagues then:
1) Still admin them without having a team in the league (preferred)
2) Hand them off to someone I trust to run that particular league and delete my team, removing me from the league.
I know FleaFlicker will let me do #2 (as of last year). Does NFL, CBS, or ESPN have the #1 functionality?
klunker18
06-30-2009, 06:12 PM
I don't think you can do that but I know you can have two managers for one team. So maybe you can start the league, but then add one of the other people to act as team manager but you would get the league manager functions? You would still technically have access to the team you just would have to not use it and only use league manager powers.

Definitely ESPN, not sure about others. My friends and I used Yahoo the first time we did fantasy but then switched to ESPN and have used that ever since, so that's the only one I know for sure. But I checked CBS and NFL just now and they won't let you do option 1. Also, I'm not entirely sure that if you add someone to the LM's team they won't get LM abilities by default, I jst don't think it would work like that.

1) Looked a the scoring and there is a 1/2 point per reception, is that standard?
2) when will we find out the draft order? how long do you expect the draft to last?
3) is there any way that we could look into changing the time? I will have a fraterinity meeting from 8-9 on that day.

1) No, it's not. However, I always thought a PPR league would be fun...it's something I want some good league discussion on possibly. Makes a well-rounded WR or RB more valuable.
2) Yahoo! automatically determines draft order once all teams have joined. I think I can set it, but I figure Yahoo!'s random feature should work fine.
3) We'll have to get feedback on that one. It's gonna be really hard to please everyone. That time works well for all US time zones, without being too late or too early. I might bump it 1 hour earlier, would that help?

I would also like to thank Mr. Bucket for wanting to set this up and following through. I'm in League 1A (The Dudes). To further elaborate on some of the questions above, the draft order will be randomly determined about 30 minutes before the start of the draft.
As for the length of the draft, that depends on a couple of things. How prepared everyone in your league is and how much attention they are paying to the draft. When everyone comes to the draft with a rankings sheet they either made themselves or found from a website or magazine it helps things go quickly. If everyone has already decided who they like with respect to who is available, it moves things along. Decisions still need to be made on when you pick again, whether or not a player is likely to "make it back to you," position scarcity, and position runs, but a simple rankings sheet can make the draft move very swiftly.
With respect to people paying attention, I have been in drafts where people were eating, watching TV, surfing the net, etc. If someone is not paying attention until it is their turn to pick, they will frequently need the majority of if not the full amount of time for their pick. This is usually because they don't know who was drafted since their last pick, and they have to check the list. The players they were targeting may be gone or a run on a position could have started that causes them to need more time to think. Incidentally, people that don't pay attention during the draft usually didn't prepare a rankings sheet.
Don't get me wrong. It's not the end of the world if someone uses most of their time every round, but it does make the draft last longer. And if five or six people in your draft use most of their time every round, it makes the draft go A LOT longer.
Techincally, the draft could take more than four and a half hours, but it won't. It could easily take two to three hours, though, if people aren't prepared. I would also not expect it to be less than an hour to an hour and a half at best.

Yeah, I did. I just kind of semi-randomly grabbed people and put them in different groups. I got people from a few places for this league:
1) Here
2) Broncos message boards
3) Chargers message board
4) Friends
5) Coworkers
6) Tenyardtorrents
I tried to make sure there was a mix of everyone amongst the leagues. I think there are 3-4 Walterfootball people in each league.

Also, Sunday the 30th I will be traveling back home and wont be home until midnight or so. I can prerank my players, but I hate doing that. I might just have a friend draft for me under my name.
We should do 1 point per reception for the league. It really doesn't make WRs that powerful as people will still take RBs in the top 6-8 picks, or at least they should. TEs become a lot more fantasy relevant this way.
I also like the idea of having divisions within each league. That way you can set the divisions up that way and use the tier system too. For example, Tier A Division 1, would have the top 6 teams, Tier A Division 2 would have teams 7-12 and so on and so forth.
And I'm really not a big fan of the flex position but thats not a big deal to me.
Waivers should also be in reverse order of standings. Makes the league more fair.

Thanks for the feedback, that's all good stuff. Now that everyone has joined I'm going to try to have discussion on all of that among the leagues, because I don't have too much of a preference either way.

I made a few rule changes and I'll be sending more info about that out later. We'll also be voting on a few things.
I also set up divisions in each league:
1A
WalterFootballers
The AFC West
We Bing
1B
Computer Nerds
Walter Footballers
AFC West Fans + 1 Other Dude
1C
Walterfootballers
Potpourri
Torrent Masters
If you are in a division, the title should make sense to you, hopefully.

I'd never used it before (besides taking surveys on it), but yeah, it's working great!
I've got 21 responses already and a pretty good idea of what the overall responses/plurality will be for everything.

Should I rename all of the Walter Football divisions to "The Glandor Division" or something more fun like that?

Awesome, 24 people have used the survey, so pretty much everything is decided at this point as there are a few options (and the ones I wanted) running away with the categories.

OK, survey results coming out soon in email.
Also, a guy on another forum got really motivated and tried to recruit enough people for a 4th league. We only need 3 more people, think you guys can get 3 more?

We've got 12 more people and a 4th league is being created.
The only way this affects any of you is that now only 3 teams from each league go into each tier after this season, making the 3rd place game important.

now that drafts are done I will go ahead and say this: Leon Washington is going to own this league
looking at the scoring projections he is the 3rd highest projected scorer on my team behind my QB and LT. giving points for return yards and receptions makes him amazing.

also, what are peoples thoughts on Green Bays D, they have looked phenominal in the preseason against everyone (tons of sacks and ints), and the offense has looked great, which means the other team will most likely be playing catch-up and passing a lot which means more ints and sacks. what are peoples reads on them? (it was them or houston, and I was torn. I decided to go with the upside pick of GB, because 1) I can take houston off of wavers if I change my mind and 2) GB plays much more offensively challenged teams than houston)

The transition to a 3-4 might be a little bit rougher when the season starts.
And I never thought about Houston.....

walt has them as a sleeper pick, and I kind of agree with it, but they draw a heck of an offensive slate. (colts twice, titans twice, NE, cini, arizona) those are a lot of high powered offenses. I will probably keep green bay for a few weeks and see what happens. you dont have a lot of choices when you wait until round 15 for a D :s. reep what you sow.

OK, we were in same draft...I went RB, RB, RB. Not planning to, but that's what happened.
I feel that I made up for it by getting decent WRs 4/5 next rounds by getting Royal, Evans, VJackson, and Driver. Hopefully Roethlisberger can play well for me at QB, but I'm happy enough with the rest of my team.

I thought you found some great WR talent in the mid rounds. I loved the Royal pick and liked the other 3 guys you got as well. Vincent Jackson in particular.

Great WRs + TE. RBs may blow up in your face, but they certainly have upside, and you can always swing a trade if you need to. I guess you have good DEF as well :)
Our league definitely looks to be close.

It's nice being able to have McFadden as a flex, but I'm a bit worried about consistency from your team. Forte will show up every week, but Donovan and all 3 of your WRs are notorious for blowing up or forgetting to show up, depending on how they feel each week.

I picked 6th
QB: Matt Schuab
RB: Ladanian Tomlinson
RB: Kevin Smith
WR: Reggie Wayne
WR: Antonio Bryant
WR: Kevin Walter
TE: Jason Witten
W/R: Leon Washington (the scoring system favors him so much)
K: John Casey
D/ST: Green Bay
bench:
Ted Ginn Jr.
Matt Hasselbeck
Fred Jackson
Chris Henry
Glen Coffee
Justin Gage
my initial thoughts: love my 3 RBs, the WRs are ok, not great (I have a solid WR1 2 and 3, with 2 upside guys on the bench to fight for the 3rd slot)
QBs are ok, middle of the road again, the one mistake I am still beating myself up over was Takeing Matt Haselbeck over Donald Brown when I forgot he was on the board in round 10.
other: love Witten this year, I think he is going to be the best TE in football, and mid 4th was great value for him, especially with .5 per reception. the D and kicker could both be improoved, I think I will sit on GB for a week or 2 and see how they do. the first team D for GB has looked phenomenal in the preseason. I don't care about kickers...
edit: just looked, and me and west face each other week 1, looks really close.

Yea my running back core is thin. If McFadden can produce then I will be fine. Otherwise I will have to trade or hope that either Fred Jackson, James Davis or Jamaal Charles plays incredible. The team has potential.

I dont trust anyone on the raiders (maybe Zach Miller, maybe). We don't have any idea what the carry situation will look like or who will start, and don't expect them to make a logical decision either. I like Fred Jackson for the first 3 weeks, then you can take stock of your RB core and make changes.

LT and Kevin Smith is a great running back combo. I like both of your QBs. Also Reggie Wayne and Jason Witten will obviously put up a ton of points for you.

Looks like everybody from Walterfootball that has posted their teams so far is going to be competitive this year. In the League 1B draft, there were some very puzzling picks, and unfortunately a very early run on WRs due to people being morons. But that's ok cause it allowed me to load up on RBs to swing a trade. Here's my team, I picked 9th:
QB- Aaron Rodgers
RB- DeAngelo Williams
RB- Clinton Portis
WR- TJ Houshmanzadeh
WR- Santana Moss
WR- Santonio Holmes
TE- Jeremy Shockey
W/R- Felix Jones
K- Mason Crosby
D- New Orleans
Bench
Leon Washington
Ahmad Bradshaw
Hakeem Nicks
Kenny Britt
Dustin Keller

I picked 10th in League 1A.
QB- Aaron Rodgers
RB- Chris Johnson
RB- Felix Jones
Flex- Leon Washington
WR- Andre Johnson
WR- Anthony Gonzalez
WR- Torry Holt
TE- Antonio Gates
D/ST- Jets
K- Nick Folk
Bench
Shaun Hill
Ahmad Bradshaw
Glen Coffee
Nate Washington
Domenik Hixon
Johnnie Lee Higgins
Overall, I'm happy with my team. I'm really happy with being able to get Jones, L. Washington, and Bradshaw with my 6th, 7th, and 9th round picks respectively. I really think Jones and Washington were undervalued for this league in particular. I'm a little thin at WR, and I hope Gonzalez breaks out this year. The only pick I'm kind of second-guessing is taking Gates over Housh. If Gates doesn't return to form this year, I'll be rethinking that pick all season. It's gonna be real fun, though.

Bumping this thread.
We're all full for 2010, but we needed to use 10 backups for this season. Follow the instructions in the 1st post (quoted below) if you're interested in being an alternate for next season.
