Question about unlocking an iphone.

Not sure how many of you guys are familiar with the process, but I need some advice.

Just bought one off craigslist, it was the first generation iphone. The phone came with an at&t sim card, but I want it switched to T-mobil. When I turn on the phone, it prompts me to hook it up to itunes, and when I do this, it's asking me to activate it using an at&t account.

When I take out the sim card and plug it into itunes, it gives me an odd error.

Can the iphone be unlocked at this stage or does it have to be activated via at&t first?

Holder, if I remember when the iPhone was released and jailbreaking was in its infancy, there was talk that later versions of iTunes would brick a "jailbroke" iPhone. So there were warnings not to upgrade iTunes. My advice, check which version of iTunes works with a 1st generation iPhone.
