I'd take Scott over Webb. Mills could win the RT job.

Mills could do it I suppose, haven't really ever seen him against good competition.

Really? I know you don't like Webb, but he played better at LT than Scott did at RT

  3. I feel for Carimi too, but hiding out and working on your own isn't the way to handle it if you clearly didn't get the job done and they bring in competition. Maybe he does have a legitimate reason, but it looks bad with everyone being as quiet as they are. I thought that Carimi could compete for the G spot (don't think he can play T) but either way, this is a disappointment from another 1st round OL no matter how you look at it. He doesn't deserve to be cut, but at this point he needs to start showing some more flashes.

Then again, if he is embarrassed by getting moved to G and can't swallow his pride he needs to go. Which is bad because up until now all I have heard is how well he has done working out over the offseason...

  4. In Jeff's defense, it is difficult to look past the fact that Webb has been given more chances than he deserves. And it is hard to look at him as a 25 year old that when he came in to the league he was EXTREMELY raw and needed a ton of work (but had and still has potential) but got thrust in to a starting job anyway. Because of that he has so much bad tape out there that is hard to ignore. He has been unquestionably the worst OT in the league for stretches, but we need to remember that physical tools are unteachable (and I'm pretty sure the guy has a learning disorder if you have ever heard him interview). Last season he showed some of the flashes of what that massive and athletic frame can do, so if he goes in to training camp this year and shows that he can take the next step and turn those flashes in to consistency he should start (and be one of the better RT's in the league). If not, I'm with Jeff, we can't lose big games just because the other team has a 1 on 1 matchup that we can't possibly win.

The fact he has been given chances because the rest of the OL are so awful are hardly his fault though and he has looked better with every season - last year he actually looked like an average NFL starter at tackle for large portions of the year.

It's a shame you never got to watch JIm Covert. The best defensive players in the league including Lawrence Taylor didn't get by Jimbo. Go to youtube and watch the Bears 1985 Divisional playoff game against the Giants.

I'm with Ortain83, Carimi doesn't deserve to be cut. If he gets a fair shot I can see him being the RG and Long the RT.

I would like a tackle that can stop the best pass rushers in the league. From what I've seen they drafted Long for him to be RG to combat Suh as Brad Biggs put it.

Otrain83 (and everyone), I'm convinced that Carimi is not getting a fair shot. I read in one of the Chi-Town papers that during mandatory workouts (before the draft) that Carimi was lining up with the "2nd team." The Bears are not doing him right. Last year they rushed him back from his injury, he doesn't play well, and now they put him with the 2nd team. C'mon. It would be nice if the Bears had 10% of the faith in him that they do for that lousy bum of a player (I use the word player loosely) Webb. I gotta believe Carimi't confidence has been scattered. If he does fail to make the team I hope he signs with another team, starts, and plays well.

It doesn't say much for the former regime (JA and Smith) that they draft a tackle (supposedly to play left tackle), excite the fan base, and a player that was the worst RT in the league the year before (2010) is considered to be a better choice to play left tackle than your #1 draft pick.

I, for one, am sick of hearing about Webb's "potential." Tice had blind faith in this guy and typed him for three years. I think it's time for everyone to see Webb as he really is, a player that doesn't have NFL talent. As a fan I've never liked a player in any sport that plays well "for stretches." As a fan I like consistency. I'd much rather watch a player who's consistently average than a player like Webb who plays well for stretches and abysmal for stretches.

I don't think Carimi could have played LT. His strength was in the running game, at LT he would have just been embarrassed at pass protecting. He shouldn't have his confidence hurt by starting at RT instead of LT. The number 1,2 and 4 picks in the draft are doing it this year, if he really had so little self-confidence in himself that starting at RT destroyed it then I doubt he was ever going to be a good player.

Which is exactly what I said in my above post. He has the potential, now is the time to show it. If he doesn't now, get rid of him. But remember he was put in a bad situation by the last regime. If last year was his first time you ever watched him play, you would say we have a starting caliber T (still probably lean more towards R than L) for the next 10 years...

Carimi to me is Chris Williams part 2. Different playing styles, same overall story. He deserves to have a roster spot, and he does deserve a fair shake to prove people wrong. I believe in what Emery is doing with his drafts though in essentially take high ceiling players and hopefully you get 3 studs out of every draft. I just don't see Carimi as a high ceiling player. I see him as a solid RG who has to compete for a starting job every year. Not that there is anything wrong with that. He just needs to make sure his pride isn't too big for that...
