  • I wasn't a fan of the Coates pick, either. It seems like there's like 3 lightning quick guys that can't catch per draft, and the Steelers aren't exactly lacking speed at WR.

I found it interesting that the Steelers have gone an entirely different way with drafting CBs. It used to be tall athletic "coach em' up" prospects that usually didn't work. Now they have gone with two guys that while may not have ideal size, actually might know how to play football.

    • I'm all in favor of doing the exact opposite of whatever our philosophy at CB has been to date.

      • Full draft opinion:

Danny Shelton NT - I really like this pick. Our defense's main problem was stopping the run, and this allows us to do it. He's drawn a lot of comparisons to Hampton and Ngata, but if he's even 3/4s as good, it's a worthwhile investment. He'll see limited field time as a 2 down nose, but I think he's going to be a force.

Cameron Erving OL: I'm pretty ambivalent on this pick. It's nice that we're getting a versatile guy who can play RT/RG/C, but most people are viewing this as a replacement for Mack. I get it. I wasn't really happy about it, but I get it.

Nate Orchard OLB: Dedicated pass rush specialist. All he really did well in college was rush the passer, and he was pretty good at it. I thought there was better prospects, but they wanted him, and got him. Hopefully it works out.

Duke Johnson RB: I like him as a prospect, and I think he has the chance to be a great change of pace back for us.... but we already have a pretty good young RB stable. He's going to be fighting for snaps.

Xavier Cooper DT: Double dipping on DL is great, considering we had mediocre pass rush and abysmal run stuffing. As much as I may like some of the guys on our DL, they didn't perform last year, so time to give them competition.

Ibraheim Campbell SS: More of a box safety like Whitner, but we needed to replace the spot that Leonard left as our 3rd safety. Our depth was pretty awful after Tashaun Gipson went down.

Vince Mayle WR: Yay a receiver! But the only problem is I don't know if he'll ever see the field. The problem is that with Bowe, Hartline, Gabriel, and Hawkins, where is this guy going to play? Battle it out with Travis Benjamin as the 5th? This guy reminds me of a slower, heavier Greg Little, who struggles with making catches when he has to. Don't know what to think about it.

Charles Gaines CB: Raw, but has a lot of physical talent. I'm okay with that in a 5th round pick. Who can't use more DB depth anyways?

Malcolm Johnson FB/TE: We didn't have a fullback, and now we do. I can't be too upset that it was a 6th round pick, so it's nice getting a lead blocker. It can't be worse than 4th round stonehands can't block Marecic. Of course, our last 6th round FB was Vickers.... so whatever. Also played TE fairly well, so I can't be too angry about this pick.

Randall Telfer TE: Another project with a knee injury. Could boom, probably won't.

Hayes Pullard OLB: Not a physical freak, but doesn't make mistakes. Who knows, could end up as a decent backup OLB.

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu CB: I **LOVE** this pick. IEO is a hugely talented CB that was a top 40 talent before a horrible knee injury. I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes our nickle, or jumps to the #2 CB across from Haden when he gets healthy.

Overall, I really like what we did. The only thing we couldn't do is address the QB problem, which will still cripple our ability to win games. It seems to me like the FO is giving JFF the ultimatum of win games, or become the next Brady Quinn the Factory of Sadness cranks out. If JFF pulls through, we can get him a blue chip WR weapon. If not, we draft blue chip QB, and maybe try for a WR in the later rounds.

The Browns got some decent players. I could criticize the failure to obtain a WR or 3 until late, but they don't have a QB to get them the ball, seeing as they are apparently content to roll with Johnny and McCown. Which will fail. But still, they're nuts if they think Hartline and Bowe will do anything for them.

It was a Browns draft. A few guys that will be pretty good, not get recognition because they play on a terrible team, and the team will still be in the AFC north cellar. And this is coming from someone that wants the Browns to do good, just for old times sake.

Now we have nothing but training camp to look forward to. I'm gonna try to make it over to Latrobe again this year. This Steelers draft, combined with some old stalwarts on the roster and coaching staff leaving, makes this one of the more interesting off seasons in a while.

          • I really liked Coates, and was envious that you guys drafted him. He has some inconsistencies, but can make any catch a TD threat.

            • They already have a guy like that developing though. I guess they are planning on Wheaton moving on after his rookie deal. If anything, he might keep DHB relegated to special teams.

              • The draft I would have liked:

                1. Byron Jones
                2. AJ Cann
                3. Steven Nelson
                4. Adrian Amos
                5. Kenny Bell
                6a same
                6b same
                7. NOT Holliman

                • I prefer to rate WR as a premium position vs Browns idea that it is a fungible position.

Bowe and Hartline aren't that great. Maybe stop gap at best. Hawkins I like a lot, but he isn't a stud or anything. our other WRs are limited for various reasons.

Time will tell on Browns draft. I liked the Shelton pick at least. Somoans are almost always good players. When is the last samoan that busted?

I'm surprised they didn't get Nelson, as they liked him before the draft. I wanted Amos as well, but I live in PSU territory, so take that with a grain of salt. Wasn't as high on Jones as others were. I was hoping for Johnson, but he went earlier.

The Steelers draft could end up being really good, though. They actually grabbed a CB before rd. 5 (two in fact!), and Dupree could be a huge steal. I'm looking forward to what happens to this group with Butler calling the shots. Seems like the assistants have a bit more say now than before.

                    • Yeah, I hear you Gong. I think WR are basically "rims on a car," but that's if you have a world class QB like Brady, Manning, or Rodgers who can take short, slow, white guys and make them look like All-Pros. If you don't, then you need all the advantages your WRs can make to help your less than stellar QB. I mean, the one good year Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr. had together made Derek "I WASN'T LAUGHING" Anderson look like an All-Pro.

QB and WR next year, unless JFF makes a comeback like the Undertaker did after being buried alive. Then just WR.

I tend to view WR the same way Leels views RB. Yeah, AJ makes Dalton seem functional and you could have taken Parker at 12, but I think you would have been better served to get Rashad Greene in the 4th. He's basically AB lite.

I like Amos as a guy to groom to take over Will Allen's roll.

My take on Dupree? Bad eyes, low FBI, lousy motor. Maybe I'm wrong (hope I am) and he'll be Stud Dupree instead of Dud Dupree. Time will tell. If we were hell bent on taking a LB, I would have preferred Diggy in the 2nd. !st after 1st after 1st at the same position is just dumb and a poor allocation of resources.
