  • Al Davis asks Lane Kiffin to resign from Raiders

Raiders owner Al Davis has been pushing for Lane Kiffin to resign as his head coach and is considering Dennis Green as a potential replacement, sources close to Kiffin and the team told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has been pushing for Lane Kiffin to resign as his head coach and is considering Dennis Green as a potential replacement, sources close to Kiffin and the team said.

Davis has gone so far to draft a letter of resignation for Kiffin to sign, a source said. Kiffin has refused to do so but has dared Davis to fire him instead.

Kiffin, who was 4-12 in his first season as coach, has two years remaining on his contract at an estimated $2 million per year.

In the letter sent to Kiffin's legal representatives, sources said Davis stated that only he would have control over his staff and full personnel decisions. According to a source close to Kiffin, Davis had promised Kiffin when he hired him that he would have more control over staff and personnel matters than recent Raiders coaches. Kiffin was allowed fire offensive assistants and to name his own staff when he took the job after the 2006 season.

"I'm not going to comment on anything that has transpired in the past three weeks," Kiffin said from Mobile, Ala., where he and the Raiders staff are coaching the North team in the Under Armour Senior Bowl college all-star game.

The Raiders had no immediate comment.

Kiffn and Davis clashed near the conclusion of their postseason evaluation meetings when Kiffin expressed his desire to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, a source said. Ryan himself wanted out to join the New York Jets in a similar capacity, but the Raiders released a statement asking for speculation to cease about the defensive coordinator's future.

Just this week at the Senior Bowl, Kiffin and Ryan both said their relationship was fine and expected to be coaching the team in 2008. However, Davis has not rescinded his request for Kiffin to step down, a source said.

As for Green's candidacy, while team sources said Davis has reached out to the veteran coach, Green said Friday, "I haven't really talked to Al about any coaching job but, really, how many times has my name been mentioned every time something goes on with the Raiders?"

LOL Davis wants to hire Dennis Green? Are you kidding me? How many bad hires do you have to make?

Kiffin was a good hire...Art Shell, Norv Turner, and Bill Callahan not so much.

Goodell needs to take the Raiders from Davis or do something, he is destroying this legendary franchise into the ground. So many bad draft picks over the past few years its disgusting.

Al Davis is a moron. I don't think Lane Kiffen was a good hire, but I don't see Dennis Green righting his wrongs either.

I used to be a Raiders fan, but after so many bad decisions by Al Davis I stopped cheering for them. I dont have a NFL team because of Al Davis, I only follow players. That guy is a f***in joke.
          Auburn Tigers in the Draft:
          Quentin Groves-DE
          Patrick Lee-CB
          Pat Sims-DT

          Colorado Buffalos in the draft
          Jordan Dizon OLB
          Terrence Wheatley CB

Some one needs to remind Davis that not even Bill Belichek could make a good team out of that mess of crappy players Davis calls a football team.

I thought Kiffin was a good hire as well. However I think Kiffin hasn't been happy in Oakland/The NFL and this has sparked things off, not Al Davis starting the problems.

I think Kiffin is doing the right thing. The ONLY reason Davis won't fire him and wants him to risign instead is because if Kiffen resigns Davis doesn't have to pay out the contract. Kiffen is sticking it to Davis by staying.

Well of course he is...Kiffin knows Davis is going to give him his buy out...no reason to walk there is nothing in it for him.

I bet Kiffin finds a QB coaching job somewhere in the NFL this year, or as an offensive quality control coach. He'll be involved then probably come back as an Offensive Coordinator then again as a Head Coach.

Also, Remember Bill Belicheck was a very average coach B.C. (Before Christ...................or in this case Tom Brady)

The Associated Press reports the Oakland Raiders denied a report Friday, Jan. 25, that owner Al Davis asked head coach Lane Kiffin to resign after Davis allegedly made a resignation letter for Kiffin to sign. "There is no issue here," Raiders senior executive John Herrera said. "There was never an issue here. There's nothing to it."

There's no telling what's going on in paradise. It is a little odd if there's something to this & Kiffin is in 'Bama coaching in the SB.I think Kiffin was a better move then past hires.Alot of the issues stems from AD though. One of the biggest reasons we lost Gruden.

That is a great job of covering up the situation...purely a PA move.

I'm not buying, "There's nothing to it"

That always means they really are going to fire him/he will quit. Maybe it will work on people with an IQ of 5, but come on.
