  • Good article on NCAABB vs. NCAAF

Which is not to say the Bowl Championship Series as it has evolved is a positive. It is an odious cartel. If you set out to design the most unfair way to choose a champion, you couldn't do much worse.

I spent years opposed to a college football playoff. The arbitrary nature of the BCS was bad enough to flip my position.

However, the fact remains that the lack of a full-scale playoff means that every week of the college football season counts.

In college football, March Madness lasts four months.

Which is probably the best explanation for why the nation so favors college football over college hoops.

Congrats to Wisconsin. Even more congrats to UK haters.

Couldn't it be because football is way more interesting than basketball?
    Forgive me I'm Swedish!

I disagree with notion that March Madness lasts for four months. LSU lost twice and still managed to find its way into the championship. Hawaii and Boise State, meanwhile, go unscathed and aren't even given a shot. If that's the case, they should move all of the mid-majors into 1-AA.

Okay Walter...how much hype did you hear about Texas vs. Kansas last night?

Exactly...not that many people talked about it. Any time you have two highly ranked teams in college football it is the talk of the week.

              That's the difference.

In the case of NCAA Football, Big games are the talk of the week because each team only plays ONE game per week. We all know the ranking in BOTH sports are terrible at best. In NCAA Football teams get rewarded for how they LOOK ON PAPER as opposed to how they play in a playoff setting as in NCAA Basketball. There is no comparison. Guaruntee that if football had a similar (albeit smaller) bracket system, the sport would see unprecedented increases in viewership and in the media. The bowl system is a joke. Why don't we just take the best record from the AFC and the NFC and have ONE championship game and let all the other teams play each other in a series of meaningless "playoff" games. Pssshhhh, it doesn't work in any other sport and shouldn't for NCAA football. The system is broke, and it makes for a very unfair finale every year.

                  Unfair finale?

Last time I checked the BCS has absolutely been on the money lately.

LSU was obviously the best team of the 07-08 season...same for Florida in 06-07. Texas in 05-06. That's three years in a row people give it some credit.

You say it shouldn't work, but apparently it does because the best teams are winning the championship games like I said for 3 years in a row.

It's not a broken system...I will say it is unfair because Big Ten and Pac 10 don't have to play championship games, but that isn't the BCS's fault. It is the fault on the commisshes of Big XII, SEC, ACC, etc.

I know immediately after I wrote that that yes in football there is only one game per week, but I get the feeling it doesn't make much difference because the regular season has much more meaning in football than basketball.

And yes the system, in the words of Emmitt, "be very broke."
