  • Carolina Panthers: Foster and Gross

Carolina has placed Foster on the trading block, and is actively seeking a trade for him. Reportedly, there are several teams interested. Carolina will cut Foster if they cannot trade him. Either way, if Foster is traded or cut, it will save the team $4.75 million.

Carolina will probably place the franchise tag on Jordan Gross. The team apparently is a long way away from a long-term deal with Jordan Gross, who wants a salary average of at least $7 million per year, and up to $18 million in guaranteed money.

Carolina is headed in the wrong direction in my opinion. A few injuries/balls don't bounce their way and they could end up with a top 3 pick in April 2009.

Why would a team trade for a guy who is about to be cut? Shouldn't they just wait?

maybe because he will command more money in free agency then just trading for him

Why did MIA draft Ted Ginn? Why did Portland draft Sam Bowie? There are plenty of "brain freeze" moments in sports.

You need to see "Top 5 Reasons you can't blame the Blazers for drafting Sam Bowie" on ESPN Classic

But I agree with what you are saying. Dumb things happen.

They may not want to take a chance that the player will sign somewhere else in free agency.

The bigger question is why would you make it clear that you are gonna cut a guy if you can't trade him. It puts you at a real disadvantage when it comes to trading him.

Because if you say you are going to cut him then it opens the door for teams to compete with each other in the trading market.

A team would rather just trade for the player now (sometimes) than have to deal with competeing with other teams on the free agent market.

Foster is not starting material, albeit DeAngelo Williams is not an every down back either IMO. Dumb move by the Panthers to say they will cut him. That just diminishes his trade value and may cause teams to wait until hes cut instead of giving up draft choices for him.

I think a team will trade for him. Obviously he'd have to agree to restructure his deal.

Maybe for a late pick. Again, that announcement was stupid, stupid, stupid.

I like Foster however it looks like they're putting all their faith in DeAngelo Williams. Dont neccassarily think its a bad idea but the new way in the NFL is to have 2 RBs one with agility and speed and another big back that will ground and pound. Could only make it harder for fantasy haha

I still wouldn't put it past Carolina to go with a Rashard Mendenhall since they resigned Travelle Wharton.
