I don't blame him for saying that ... a lot of ppl were high on alex smith last year after the 49ers even traded up for Joe Staley for OL help. I mean Vernon Davis was supposed to be a pro bowler by now.
Keep in mind what projections we had on teams in hindsight ... we learn from that and adapt to the foresight ... learning our own history of how we look at teams in hindsight helps our foresight.

I was never high on Smith. He can't avoid a rush up the middle, he has bad accuracy, etc, etc.
Tebow and Smith, while similar athletically, have some large differences. Tebow makes decent (not great, but decent) reads. Smith cannot. Tebow can, as you even said, play in "NFL-style" systems like the west coast. Besides, there are teams that are successful with a spread-type offense (read: New England). Smith is a system QB. Also, like Walter, I think he will be drafted high, but I'm not saying he will be a good QB in the NFL.

There is such a huge gap in that logic and I finally have the ammo now to take a Tebow lover down (this is a round 1 knockout people!!!!!)
1. You say Tebow makes decent (not great) reads ... um so did Alex Smith at Utah in Urban Meyer's triple read option which is obviously the same offense Tebow runs. Easy to make easy read options in college than west coast protection reads in a totally different language in the NFL.
2. Tebow can probably plan in an NFL style system, but like I said, it would take him 3-4 years of him ON THE BENCH in order to learn it before he even sees the field ... thus not making him worth a high draft pick. Tebow's arm strength is very good and accuracy is good but touch is horrendous and I think his passing hides a ton of his weaknesses (see Michigan game especially 4th quarter of Michigan game)
3. Spread offense can be more NFL WCO style and it can be more read option West Virginia offense style (it varies and it is become a more broad concept on what a spread specifically is because every offense has some kind of element of a "spread") This is a moot point ... and a horrnedous one to bring up.
4. So Alex Smith is a system QB only because he has failed (so far) as a pro but Tebow isn't a system QB because he hasn't failed yet as a college player. Oh yea WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL OF THE ****ING COLT BRENNAN LOVERS??????/

I'll respond to the bold part first: No way. He reminds me of another player, one we both like, Andre Woodson. Both may have to sit for a year or even two, but not 3 or 4. Like Woodson, his selling point is his potential. He has way more potential then Cantwell, Stafford, Daniel, and the rest. Smith is way less polished then Tebow. Lets recall Smith's HS career. He wasn't a very good passer, but it didn't matter thanks to Reggie Bush. Tebow, meanwhile, had almost nothing around him, so there wasn't a way to hide his flaws. Tebow can and will improve with time on the bench, just like Woodson and just like Tony Romo. Besides, you yourself said Smith looked OK during the 06 season. It's time for round two!!!
Woodson comes from an NFL offense first of all Tebow comes from a triple read high school option offense.
Smith is way less polished than Tebow? I'd say Smith is ten times more polished than Tebow. Tebow has HORRENDOUS MECHANICS, HORRENDOUS FOOTWORK, AND A LEFTWICH RELEASE!!!!!!
What a bull**** argument how dare you bring in Woodson into this argument just because he has "upside" what a load of feces you just dumped into this thread.
