    Official.

"Though terms of the deal weren't announced, it is believed Vilma will go to the Saints for a fourth-round pick in 2009 that could be upgraded to a third-round based on how he plays in 2008. Vilma is in the final year of his contract and he goes to New Orleans without a new deal."

    WTF?! That's it?! Better be more like a 2nd or a 3rd!

And it isn't even for this year!!!!
I agree. Sure he sucked this year, but still. Vilma's great in the correct system.

"Ok, here's the deal on the Vilma trade. Stay with me because this gets a little twisty.

The Jets received a fourth-round pick in the upcoming 2008 draft. That's theirs and they will use it or trade it or whatever they want to do with it in two months. If Darren McFadden is around in the fourth round, he'll be a Jet.

Now, if Vilma reaches certain playing time levels AND he winds up signing an extension with the Saints (remember, Vilma didn't renegotiate so he's a free agent after the 08 season), then the Jets will get either a second or a third rounder in 2009 but they would have to sort of pay back the original value of the deal by giving the Saints a fourth-round pick.

    Follow?

So the best case for the Jets is that they wind up with a fourth this year, a second next year, but have to give up a fourth in 2009."

    I am much happier now.

Good news about this all, well for Jets fans at least.

"Just got off the phone with Mike Tannenbaum on a conference call. He said that the Jets aren't getting a conditional pick in 2009 from the Saints for Vilma. He said the deal is for a solid pick THIS YEAR in 2008 and, based on Vilma's production, possibly another pick in 2009. And it sounds like that second one could be a third-rounder."

    Much better if true!

I'd still like to see what the conditions are, and if they are based more on stats or playing time. Either way, if the end up with a 3rd Rounder, that's still not horrible seeing as how there is no way he was staying after 2008.
    Agree with everything you said.

That injury screwed the Jets. He's worth more than that.

Good trade for all parties. Vilma get back into a 4-3, where he is naturally suited, and The Jets get something for him because he was definitely walking. He'll also be the leader and impact player New Orleans desperately needs on defense.

good for Vilma... I've always liked him, he just got caught up in the wrong defensive scheme. Now he goes to a team with a shot at contending.

If the Jets didn't do this trade now they would get nothing when Vilma becomes a free agent in 09 and walks. Plus the knee injury and partly because teams know Vilma doesn't fit the Jets scheme is why he was valued at a 3rd rounder. Def a solid trade for the Saints. Now if they could get some secondary help...

I love Vilma and we was a perfect fit before they changed defenseive schemes... Saints got a steal on this one and guess the Jets got a decent price in return

Vilma will be a good fit in New Orleans IF they get a nice D-Tackle.

I guess my Jets Vilma jersey will be retired next to my Santana Moss.
