    2008 1st round mock draft 3.0

    1. Dolphins Matt Ryan - QB, Boston College

Conjecture: With an already depleted QB pool in the League today and next years draft as of right now IMO does not appear to have any blue chip QB talent. I know he is a gamble and also maybe a reach with the 1st pick, but I can’t foresee “The Big Tuna” circling his wagons around the QB’s currently on their roster.(remember recent drafts were not of his choosing) I don’t think any block buster trades are in the works for a proven Veteran QB. Further there will be no guarantees to get a QB of their choice in the 2nd round either. I base my pick on these assumptions. (Their might be a safer pick here, but he wont equal wins for the Dolphins. At 1-15 how Ryan be considered a reach for them?)

    2. Rams Vernon Gholston - DE/OLB, Ohio St

Conjecture : IMO Jake Long does not rate high enough to warrant a number 2 selection in this or any other draft. (IMO you don’t draft RT prospects with the 2nd overall pick) They should be able to find some help on the OL later in the draft.
I think the Rams are being coy in not tipping their hand, but I think they must conceder Gholston with this pick. At the moment he might not be the most polished player in the draft, but he has the highest potential IMHO. (Vernon Gholston or Chris Long with this pick)

    3. Falcons Glenn Dorsey - DL, LSU

Conjecture: I don’t believe his stock has dropped, in the South especially and Mike Smith is a defensive minded Coach. I think they will hope to get help on the OL with their 2nd round selection. A Defensive minded Coach will build his defense from the middle and try and stop the run first, because they know if you can, all of a sudden even a less then average pass rush becomes better, given the percentages of predictability.

    4. Raiders Chris Long - DE/OLB, Virginia

Conjecture: Can Al Davis resist the temptation of awakening the football God’s of old and pass on the son of a Raider God? Just think of the tickets he will sell. “Show me the Money”
IMO Chris Long is probable the most ready of his pears to play for a team at the next level. I think in the long term he will be solid player if not a spectacular one. If Chris long is not available, I think they would go with DE Vernon Gholston if available or RB Darren McFadden.

    5. Chiefs Jake Long - OL, Michigan

Conjecture: OT Jake Long will be a good player, but Joe Thomas he is not. There is no scenario I can think of that would have Jake Long fall past the Chiefs, given they keep this pick.
If he is off the board then I could see them picking DT Sedrick Ellis.

    6. Jets Leodis McKelvin - DB, Troy

Conjecture: The Jet’s lost out on the Asante Samuel auction, but with this selection they not only get a top cover corner, but he might also help the jets in another trouble area and that’s as a punt return specialist. I think that gives him more value at this point in the draft. Sedrick Ellis is another option they should conceder with this pick. (Leon Washington is a better KR specialist then at returning punts. Leon Washington : 14 (FC) out of 34 total and 0 TD‘s
compared to Devin Hester: 6 (FC) out of 42 total and 4 TD’s
    )

    7. Patriots Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - DB, Tennessee State

Conjecture: Asante Samuel priced him self out of a job with the Patriots. Knowing how Bill Belichick LOVES his CB’s (But not ones with big contract demands) and also a fact that’s been mentioned on this site “ he likes his LB’s to be Veteran players”. I think he will use this pick if he stays at this draft position on the top CB prospect left on the board. IMO he could turn out to be the best CB out of this years crop. (Bill Belichick really loves his draft picks and the more the merrier and if he thinks he can still get good value on a CB later in round one along with more picks he might just do that)

    8. Ravens Sedrick Ellis - DL, USC

Conjecture: I don’t think Ossie Newsome gets the credit he deserves when it comes to judging talent. Given the players that are left and also the fact that a division rival is on the clock next. I don’t see them passing on the best talent available or QB Matt Ryan if he is on the board.
( I hope Ossie Newsome does not make me eat my words by selecting QB Brian Brohm with this high of a selection)

    9. Bengals Keith Rivers - OLB, USC

Conjecture: If the top two DT prospects off the board. They can pencil Keith Rivers in at WOLB. If not then they will pick which ever DT left. (They might try to move up a couple of picks to have a chance at DT Sedrick Ellis)

    10. Saints Derrick Harvey - DE/OLB, Florida

Conjecture: Most of the time I don’t rate these hybrid type players so high, because of the transition, but with his combine numbers and also his pro day work outs, if not for Chris Long and Vernon Gholston we might be hearing his name sooner then with the 10th pick. The Saints starting SS Roman Harper was tied for 2nd place with 4 sacks last season and everyone knows that’s not a good team stat when your Safety’s have to blitz all the time to get pressure. They might also conceder a CB with this pick If one happens to fall to them or LB Keith Rivers if he is on the board.

    11. Bills Limas Sweed - WR, Texas

Conjecture: Malcolm Kelly’s stock has dropped some in my estimation and in watching film on the two WR’s Limas Sweed grades out a little better IMO. Why? I like the fact that he goes and gets the ball at it’s highest point, unlike Malcolm Kelly (to often Kelly lets the ball get to his body. Its been said that Kelly has the best hands in this class of receivers, but I don’t know what they are seeing, unless they are watching another player) and he seems to have a better ability of making YAC. His numbers at Texas pro days should help to cement him as the top talent this year at WR. Limas Sweed is the most polished receiver at this point. (Receiver Type: Y)

(The self proclaimed King of Draft Mel Kiper Jr. does not even have him ranked on his board, In fact there is not one Sr. WR ranked on his Big Board….Sounds like a man crush to me! …..I have Limas Sweed ranked #1 WR overall, not this high, but he is a least in my radar! The Bill‘s should try and trade out of this pick if possible. They can probably still get the WR they like with lets say the Eagles 19th pick)

    12. Broncos Ryan Clady - OL, Boise State

Conjecture: With the top ‘front seven’ players off the board. I would look for them to upgrade their OL with this pick. There are a few players that would fit the bill, but IMO Ryan Clady fits their style of play best of the OL prospects available. (Ryan Clady is the number one LT prospect in this draft and depending on how the first four picks shake out, he could go even higher based on supply and demand for LT’s)

    13. Panthers Branden Albert - OL, Virginia

Conjecture: Unless a blue chip talent drops to them. Like DE Derrick Harvey.
The Panthers have been pretty active in plugging holes this off season, but have neglected to address the OL, unless one would conceder the signing of FA OG Keydrick Vincent ( who?) an addition, with two OL starters from last years team released. (I think Branden Albert makes more since here with this pick over Chris Williams, because I think he can start from day one at OG and the move to LT once he gets his feet wet)

    14. Bears Rashard Mendenhall - RB, Illinois

Conjecture: I think of the top RB’s in this years draft he translates to the next level a little better then Darren McFadden. On most of Darren McFadden’s big runs in Collage no one even laid a had on him. I don't believe he will have it so easy in the NFL and I don’t foresee Darren McFadden making a living with yards after contact like Rashard Mendenhall. I had them taking
OT Jeff Otah in my last mock.
(Hey Chicago! QB Chad Henne should be available with the 44th pick in round two)

    15. Lions Chris Williams - OL, Vanderbilt

Conjecture: The Lions would love to have Rashard Mendenhall fall to them, but I don’t see Chicago passing on him with a divisional opponent drafting behind them. They won’t want to face him twice a year. (IMO Jeff Otah is a better prospect, but I only see him as a RT in the NFL so he may drop on some draft boards)

    16. Cardinals Mike Jenkins - DB, South Florida

Conjecture: Most years Mike Jenkins might have been the top CB taken. I had them taking RB Jonathan Stewart, before his surgery, but I think now he may drop out of the 1st round. Not because I think he will not be a good running back at the next level, but because of the $$ spent on the 16th pick of the draft. Just in case there are setbacks with his surgury.

    17. Vikings Phillip Merling - DL, Clemson

Conjecture: The Vikings have not had good luck in recent drafts in finding a every down DE and I think that’s what you get with Phillip Merling. CB Mike Jenkins If he drops to them, would also be another possibility here.

    18. Texans Aqib Talib - DB, Kansas

Conjecture: IMO his best pro position may be at FS, I think he will start out at corner, but in the long term I see him at FS. RB Jonathan Stewart is still an option with this pick. OT Jeff Otah
Is also in their radar with this pick.

    19. Eagles Jeff Otah - OL, Pittsburgh

Conjecture: The Eagles need help on offense, specifically at WR, but I think if they have a chance to draft one of the top OT’s they wont hesitate to do so. They should be able to pick up a WR with their next pick. (If they can’t get one of the top OL prospects. I think they will select a WR here)

    20. Buccaneers DeSean Jackson - WR/PR, California

Conjecture: John Grudden loves these type of receivers and he has the added value of being a
punt return specialist. (Receiver Type: Slot)

    21. Redskins Quentin Groves - DE/OLB, Auburn

Conjecture: There are no true DE’s left on the board worthy of this high of a selection IMO, but he can cut his teeth with this team as a pass rush specialist until he can learn to play LB. I rate him a notch below DE Derrick Harvey in terms of pass rush ability.

    22. Cowboys Darren McFadden - RB, Arkansas

Conjecture: I don’t think Darren McFadden will be here at 22, but I also think Jerry Jones will stop at nothing to get his home boy. I haven’t a crystal ball for a reference and can’t say were and when, but I think when the dust settles he will be a Cowboy. If he is not available I could see them drafting a WR or DB with this pick.

    23. Steelers Kenny Phillips - DB, Miami

Conjecture: It’s not written in stone that the Steelers will select OL with this pick, I wouldn‘t be at all surprised to see the Steelers pick LB Jerod Mayo with this pick either. They might even want to draft down and pick up some extra picks and take OG Chilo Rachal and OC Mike Pollak in round two. Kenny Phillips is a bit of a reach here with this pick, but FS Anthony Smith and Ryan Clark are not the answer at FS for this team.

    24. Titans Devin Thomas - WR, MSU

Conjecture: If a DE were to fall to them. I think that would be their choice here, however I don’t foresee that happening. They made some moves in the FA market here, but IMO they were merely ‘Purple Herrings’. I wouldn’t think he will go much higher, because his lack of experience, but Devin Thomas could prove to be the best of this class. (Receiver Type: Z)

    25. Seahawks James Hardy - WR, Indiana

Conjecture: Now that the Seahawks have lost D.J. Hackett to FA. It stands to reason that they will look to fill the spot that’s been vacated. (Receiver Type: Y) (I had them picking Early Doucet with my last mock, but with his poor 40 times and that he projects to a slot receiver, I have taken him out of the my 1st round, but I still think he would be a good fit for the west coast offense that the Seahawks employ and will likely be available in round two, so with that said DL Kentwan Balmer is also a player in their radar)

    26. Jaguars Kentwan Balmer, DL, North Carolina

Conjecture: Why they got rid of DT Marcus Stroud I can only guess, but now they have some big shoes to fill and I think it starts with this selection of Kentwan Balmer or possibly DT Dre Moore. They would love to have a DE fall to them here or possibly move up. CB Antoine Cason is another possibility with this pick.

    27. Chargers Reggie Smith - DB, Oklahoma

Conjecture: Reggie Smith maybe the best Safety prospect in this draft, even though he is not listed as such. The Chargers have few holes other then DB and back-up RB, due to defections in FA. (He should be able to help them right away as a nickel back)

    28. Cowboys Antoine Cason - DB, Arizona

Conjecture: The best DB left on the board. (It’s also not out of the realm of possibility that this pick could be packaged along with their 21st to move up to select RB Darren McFadden)

    29. 49ers Gosder Cherilus - OL, Boston College

Conjecture: IMO this pick is not as much of a reach as some might believe. They have at least temporarily stopped the leak at WR so they can afford to make this pick here in the 1st round with the best OL on the board. With teams picking high in the 2nd round looking to get what OT’s are left IMO it would be a good pick for their team. OT Carl Nicks I think would be another probable pick here.

    30. Packers Joe Flacco - QB, Delaware

Conjecture: I think their biggest need maybe (Brett Farve LOL) TE, but no one TE is worthy of this selection. IMO I would try and trade out of this spot with a team looking to move up to get one of the QB’s or OL prospects and then select a TE in the 2nd round. CB Tracy Porter is also in their radar with this pick.
(Joe Flacco I think could be their pick here, because I think they will like to have some insurance just incase Aaron Rodgers is not the answer at QB. Joe Flacco has the strongest arm of this years class of QB‘s, but he will need some time to develop, to work on his foot work and delivery)

    31. Giants Jerod Mayo - LB, Tennessee

Conjecture: Need pick! also a prospect on the rise. They lost two LB’s to FA
They are also thin at Safety with the defection of FS Gibril Wilson so Safety is another possibility with this pick.

    Players on the cusp

    Jonathan Stewart - RB, Oregon
    Tracy Porter - DB, Indiana
    Dre Moore - DL, Maryland
    Carl Nicks - OL, Nebraska
    Erin Henderson - OLB, Maryland
    Lawrence Jackson - DL, USC
    Chilo Rachal - OG, USC

    Underrated Talent

    Reggie Smith - DB, Oklahoma
    Earl Bennett - WR, Vanderbilt
    Terrence Wheatley - DB, Colorado
Todd Blythe - WR, Iowa St

    Overrated Talent

    Malcolm Kelly - WR, Oklahoma
    Darren McFadden - RB, Arkansas
    Chris Williams - OL, Vanderbilt
    Aqib Talib - DB, Kansas
    Brian Brohm - QB, Louisville
    Brandon Flowers - DB, VT

    Good possibility of a 1st round trade with picks: 4, 7, 9, 11, 19, 22, 24, 27, 28 & 30.

    Welcome to the forums FL_Dawgs.

Wow McFadden to 22. That would be amazing if he fell that fall. I'm sure Jerry would pull the trigger and trade up if he fell past 6.

Joe Flacco at 30 interesting. Someone's not sold on Aaron Rodgers or Brohm for that matter.

      Here are my concerns:

      - Dolphins: Elite player like Chris Long over pretty good QB like Matt Ryan.

      - Ravens: Sedrick Ellis is really dumb considering he probably can't play DE.

      - Saints: Already signed Bobby McCray this offseason

      - Panthers: They have Travelle Warton moving inside to G.

      - Bears: Jerry Angelo is a ****ty GM so he'd take McFadden

      - 49ers: I don't think Gosder Cherilous can play LT (Pretty sure Joe Staley is RT)

-Packers: BRIAN BROHM! BRIAN BROHM! BRIAN BROHM! BRIAN BROHM! BRIAN BROHM! BRIAN BROHM! BRIAN BROHM! BRIAN BROHM! BRIAN BROHM! BRIAN BROHM!

So who cares Flacco is going to be a Andrew Walter type player. If you can't beat out Tyler Palko then you suck.

So we're paying 30 million for a backup NT? Ryan Clady makes more sense.

Decent draft overall. Matt Ryan first is totally screwed since he is barely a Top 10 pick but not bad.

Yes, you can win games without Matt Ryan as your QB. If he had the JaMarcus Russell upside then I would be all for taking him. He's kind of an average QB.

The Giants won a Super Bowl with Eli Manning at the helm, Baltimore won a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer. These teams show that an elite defense can make game managing QBs, MVPs.

Eli did more than just manage the game in the Super Bowl in my opinion. Aside from Dilfer and Johnson a big time QB has won the Super Bowl for as long as I can remember.
