Consider that the injury is very unlikely to be career threatening. Even if it does shut down his career, the quality of life for him is very likely to be solid either way, it's more likely to be a precautionary measure than anything. Also consider that if he's forced to retire, he was making gobs of money, and should have bankrolled/invested enough to live off of.
